Asifa Lahore Delivers Vegan Foods and Message of Compassion for Eid al-Adha
To celebrate Eid al-Adha, Asifa Lahore, Britain’s first Muslim drag queen, has delivered a hamper of vegan goodies to London Mayor Sadiq Khan at City Hall.
Asifa and PETA hope the gesture will encourage the mayor and all other Muslims to show compassion for all while celebrating holy days, as Asifa explains:
Eid al-Adha is a holy time of sacrifice and generosity to friends, family, and those in need. And none are more in need of our help and kindness than animals, which is why PETA and I encourage everyone, including Mayor Khan, to celebrate Eid with vegan foods and to invite friends and neighbours to share in the festivities.
Compassion is a basic tenet of all major religions, including Islam. The Prophet Muhammad taught that an act of cruelty to an animal is as bad as cruelty to a human being. Despite this, during the “Festival of Sacrifice”, millions of gentle sheep – whose lives are as dear to them as ours are to us – are mercilessly killed. The faithful can choose to reject animal sacrifices and instead show mercy during Eid simply by eating vegan – that is, by choosing foods derived from fruits, vegetables, grains, pulses, and nuts instead of animals. PETA has lots of delectable vegan Eid recipes, too, so there’s no need to sacrifice taste or satisfaction.
A vegan Eid Mabrouk to all our Muslim brothers and sisters!
