The Pizza Burger

When our very own Sarah C saw the NY Pizza Burger in the news, she was determined to “veganise” it, knowing that PETA staff members like a bit of junk food every now and then (she’s right – no crumbs were left on the plate!).

Containing no animal ingredients whatsoever, this can easily be made at home using Sarah’s not-so-secret recipe and the instructions below, this will take around an hour to prepare and cook:

1 pack Granose Burger Mix
1 tin kidney beans
1 tin crab-eye beans
3 cloves garlic
Chilli powder
Oil
1 tin tomatoes
1 onion
Mixed herbs
2 slices of bread from the biggest loaf you can find

  • Add water to the burger mix to create a sticky mixture that you can mould. Empty the kidney beans and crab-eye beans into the burger mix and mash together. Add three-quarters of an onion, 2 cloves of garlic and as much chilli powder as you can handle!
  • Gently heat a pan with a little oil, and spread the burger patty mix to cover the pan. Cook the one side for approximately 20 minutes or until it seems cooked on the bottom. The next part is tricky. You need another pan of the same size to flip the burger into. Because of its size, you might need two people to do this! Continue to cook the other side for approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Heat the tomatoes and add the remaining onion and garlic. Once hot, spread over the burger. Add your dairy-free cheese. I added vegan pepperoni to the top of my pizza burger – for originality. Place the whole pan in the oven to melt the “cheese”.
  • Remove once you’re satisfied with how melted your “cheese” is.
  • Slide your pizza burger out of the pan and onto your bread. Add the top piece of bread.
  • Sprinkle herbs over the top piece of bread, and voilà! You have your very own vegan pizza burger.

There you have it, weighing in at one-third fewer calories than Burger King’s entry. And definitely meant to be shared, the 11-inch vegan pizza burger serves eight people quite well.
