THE OVEN MITTS ARE OFF: THE ‘GREAT VEGAN BAKE-OFF’ IS ON

PETA Launches Annual Competition to Find Best Cruelty-Free Confectionery

London – Following the success of last year’s vegan bake-off, PETA is inviting would-be vegan master bakers to put their skills to the test and share their favourite creations. Finalists will have their recipes featured by PETA, and the winner will be crowned the Great Vegan Bake-Off champion for 2015. Last year’s finalists can be seen here.

“Baking is a fun and creative hobby – but when it includes eggs and dairy products, it’s murder on cows and chickens”, says PETA Director Mimi Bekhechi. “The great news is that any animal-derived product can easily be replaced, maintaining all the flavour without any of the cruelty. Who wouldn’t want to indulge in decadent cakes without feeling guilty?”

According to new research, huge numbers of us are switching from cows’ milk to non-dairy milk – 15 per cent of Europeans now choose to buy plant-based milks, such as soya, rice, oat, almond and coconut milk. Diets heavy in cholesterol and saturated fat, both of which are found in dairy products and eggs, can increase the risk of falling victim to many of the UK’s top killers, including heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and cancer. Not only are plant-based meals better for our health and the planet – since animal agriculture is one of the biggest contributors to climate change – they also spare millions of animals the horrors of factory farms and the terror of the abattoir every year.

Contestants in the Great Vegan Bake-Off are required to post their recipes, along with pictures or video footage, on their blog or YouTube channel and send the URL to [email protected] with “VEGAN BAKE-OFF” in the subject line. Entries must be received before 4 September at 5pm.
