London, 21 October 2004 – A lot of kids are into questioning authority, and PETA wants to help them do it. The animal rights organization’s new Web site peta2.co.uk puts a new face on animal rights by speaking directly to young people aged 13 to 24 in a language that they can relate to. Teens will find many of their favourite musicians – including ultra-hip punk bands such as Pitchshifter, Conflict, NoFX and Good Charlotte – explaining that there’s nothing cool about animal abuse but that it’s very cool to do something about it. John Feldmann, the lead singer of Goldfinger and a longtime PETA supporter, is helping to launch the site on 21 October by donating autographed T-shirts, sweatshirts, CDs and even a guitar to be given away to the winners of PETA2’s launch contest.
Peta2.co.uk is packed with information to help kids make animal rights campaigning productive and “in your face” – something PETA knows a thing or two about. The “Street Team” section gives kids the opportunity to participate in animal rights actions and earn points that they can redeem for PETA merchandise and other prizes. Visitors can order an array of items designed especially for the site, such as pins, badges, e-cards and banners with inscriptions like “Bite Me –I’m Vegan”, “Meat: It’s What’s Rotting in Your Colon” and the site’s theme, “Question Authority”.
Kids will get the lowdown from famous PETA spokespersons such as Morrissey, pro skateboarder Jen O’Brien and photographer Glen E. Friedman. They’ll also get up-to-the-minute alerts; offbeat, downloadable screensavers and stencils and bulletin boards where they can bounce ideas off other kids.
“Today’s young people are always ready to question the status quo”, says Dawn Carr. “Kids have the power and the energy to bring about enormous change, and peta2.co.uk gives them the tools to do it.”
