Newcastle – Displaying a large crime-scene witness board giving graphic details of the violent deaths involved in producing a bucket of KFC chicken, members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) dressed as police will appear outside a Newcastle KFC restaurant on Thursday. The “compassion cops” will show video “crime scene” footage taken inside a KFC abattoir and hand potential customers gruesome reports describing the torment endured by millions of chickens raised and killed for KFC. PETA’s “police” will ask passers-by to assist them in their inquiries and to prevent future violence by eating elsewhere:
Date: Thursday, 26 May
Time: 12 noon sharp
Place: Outside KFC, 136-138 Northumberland Street
The action is a new way for PETA’s international campaign to draw customers’ attention to the need for KFC to make basic improvements based on the best available scientific research and the recommendations of members of KFC’s own animal welfare advisory panel.
“Birds feel fear and pain, and if KFC executives treated cats or dogs the way they treat chickens, they would be had up on cruelty charges”, says PETA Director of European Campaigns Sean Gifford.
The Sunday Mirror led a report on an investigation into a UK KFC supplier with the headline “Distressed and Dying in a Cramped Shed … Nobody Does Chicken Like KFC”. Other undercover investigations, including an abattoir in West Virginia, in the US, where workers were caught kicking, throwing and stomping on live birds in a widely distributed video, have turned up exactly the same abuses that KFC denies having to address – including crippled chickens kept in crowded, filthy conditions and sadistically tortured.
PETA’s growing list of international celebrities who have supported its campaign against KFC includes rock legends Sir Paul McCartney and Chrissie Hynde, The Darkness lead singer Justin Hawkins, rock group Ash, actor Pam Anderson and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons.
