London – Multi-talented musician and Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor took a brief timeout from his whirlwind world tour to narrate a brand-new video exposé for PETA about the millions of cats and dogs who are tormented before they are barbarically slaughtered by the fur industry in China. Reznor, whose latest accolade came in the form of a Grammy nomination for the hit “The Hand That Feeds” from Nine Inch Nails’ With Teeth album, was so moved by the video footage that he agreed to narrate it.

China – where not a single law protects animals killed for fur – has become the world’s leading fur exporter. The video shows cats and dogs without food or water who have been rounded up in Beijing and other cities as they are hauled to their deaths on trucks containing as many as 800 live, dead and dying animals. The cages are tossed onto the ground 10 feet below, shattering the animals’ bones and causing them to scream in agony.

“Every year, millions of cats and dogs are killed for their fur”, says Reznor. “[The animals’] weakened bodies are bludgeoned, hanged, bled or strangled with wire nooses to kill them.”

The fur is often deliberately mislabelled as fur from other species, and those who sell fur items in Europe aren’t legally required to identify the species of animal. Fur-wearers may be buying fur from cats and dogs unknowingly, so PETA is urging consumers not to buy any fur.

“Cat and dog fur can only be identified with expensive DNA tests, so there’s no way of knowing what – or whom – you are buying”, says PETA Europe’s Campaign Co-ordinator Anita Singh. “We’re extremely grateful that Trent is helping us get out the message that buying anything with fur – even if it’s ‘just a little trim’ – supports one of the most gruesome industries on the planet.”
