Planet Earth Named ‘Best Animal-Friendly Television Programme’ for Its Insightful Portrayal of the Animal Kingdom and the Threats Facing It
London – In recognition of the TV series’ pioneering cinematography and intimate portrayal of some of Earth’s most threatened species, the BBC’s Planet Earth has won an award from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Europe (PETA). Planet Earth has been named the “Best Animal-Friendly Television Programme” in PETA’s second annual Proggy Awards. The production team behind the inimitable series will receive a framed award and will be featured on PETA.org.uk. “Proggy” stands for progress, and the Proggy Awards recognise animal-friendly achievements in commerce and culture.
Planet Earth is beautifully filmed and offers an educational and enlightening look at our planet. Broadcast in hour-long instalments that delve into the intricacies of the myriad eco-systems in our world’s oceans, mountains, jungles and deserts, the series not only provides stunning video footage but also addresses important issues like humans’ effect on the environment and the problems climate change and global warming are causing around the world.
“Planet Earth has encouraged millions of people to consider animals’ precious lives and our duty to take care of them by bringing viewers face to face with the animal kingdom and showing viewers the bold reality of animals’ everyday lives”, says PETA’s Sarah Dickinson. “The first step in ending cruelty to animals is respecting and appreciating their needs.”
More than 25 Proggy Awards have been given out this year, and the winners include a multi-national pizza chain, a city council, and independent producers and marketers of vegan foods and cruelty-free personal care products.
