Lincolnshire Girl Receives PETA Award For Saving Peacocks

Martin, Lincolnshire – A 10-year-old schoolgirl, whose intervention saved 11 peacocks from being killed because they were an inconvenience, has earned recognition from PETA. Kirsty Barthorpe, who goes to school in Martin, will receive PETA’s Compassionate Youth Award.

According to news reports, Martin residents had threatened to have the peacocks killed because the birds were eating flowers, soiling lawns, and scratching cars. After Kirsty became aware that the birds’ lives were in danger, she appealed to her father, Nigel, for help. He agreed to relocate the birds to the safety of his aquatic centre, which is also home to several rescued chickens and ducks.

“We commend Kirsty for having the compassion to find a humane solution to this conflict”, says PETA Europe Director Robbie LeBlanc. “This little girl’s decision to help the birds proves that you’re never too young to look out for animals and even save lives.”

Kirsty Barthorpe will receive a framed certificate accompanied by a letter of appreciation from PETA.
