London – Ever since five young lads from various defunct bands got together in 2004 and formed Bring Me the Horizon, they’ve been on a steady trek in just one direction: straight up. Even though they’re about to embark on a world tour to promote their brand-new album, Suicide Season, frontman Oli Sykes somehow made time to shoot a pro-vegetarian ad for peta2 US – the youth arm of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) US.
“I decided to go vegetarian after I saw a video on peta2’s Web site”, says Sykes in the ad. “When I saw how animals are tortured on factory farms, I couldn’t justify being a part of that cruelty. I thought, ‘Imagine if that were me’. Straight away, I said, ‘That’s it – I’m going vegetarian’.”
As if recording and touring weren’t enough to keep Sykes occupied, he also has his own clothing company called Dropdead, which designed a special shirt for peta2 US with the slogan “Meat Sucks”.
Sykes isn’t the only vegetarian in the band – guitarists Matt Kean and Matt Nicholls also refuse to support the cruel meat industry.
Oli joins a growing list of musicians – including Dillinger Escape Plan, hellogoodbye, Lamb of God, Kids in Glass Houses, Aiden, As I Lay Dying and Rise Against – who’ve teamed up with peta2 UK and peta2 US to inspire people to challenge outdated, cruel attitudes towards animals.
