Nottinghamshire – In the wake of cruelty charges against a police-dog handler who left two German shepherds inside a hot car outside Nottinghamshire police headquarters, PETA has sent its public service announcement (PSA) featuring Britain’s Got Talent judge Simon Cowell to television stations around the country. The animal rights group hopes that by airing the PSA – which warns of the dangers of leaving dogs inside hot cars – further deaths might be prevented.

“Far be it from me to be critical, but I find it really appalling that this year, thousands of dogs will die of heatstroke inside parked cars”, Cowell says in the ad, in which he appears with his canine pal, Claude. “Never, ever leave your dog inside a parked car. Your dog idolises you. In warm weather, keep him safe at home.”

PETA wants people to know that leaving the windows slightly open or using a tree for shade does not prevent the temperature inside a parked car from soaring. Even on a relatively mild 28ºC day, the temperature inside a car parked in the shade can climb rapidly to a dangerous 32ºC, and the inside of a car parked in the sun can reach a deadly 71ºC.

“Our dogs deserve better than for us to take chances with their lives by leaving them in cars during the summer”, says PETA’s Poorva Joshipura. “Even on days that are merely warm, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Always plan to leave your animal companions at home in safe temperatures.”
