London – Wearing nothing but bikinis made from strategically placed lettuce leaves and handing out delicious vegan sausages, PETA’s Lettuce Ladies made a surprise appearance today at London’s famous wax museum, Madame Tussauds, during the unveiling of Lady Gaga’s wax figure.

Having declared it “Gaga Day,” the museum celebrated the unveiling by granting free admission to the first 100 people who showed up costumed like Lady Gaga. Because Lady Gaga notoriously showed up at this year’s MTV Music Video Awards in a dress made of meat, PETA’s Lettuce Ladies, convinced that some of her copycat fans would be queuing up for the unveiling in fleshy garb of their own, wanted to let the rocker’s “little monsters” know that consuming meat – or wearing it – is an endorsement of cruelty to animals.

“It’s almost Christmas, a time of goodwill, so we’re asking people to have a heart and leave animals off their plates and out of their wardrobes”, says Lettuce Lady Abi Izzard. “After all, what could ever be more in fashion than compassion?”

Meat is vile, not vogue. On today’s industrialised meat and dairy farms, chickens and turkeys have their throats cut while they’re still conscious, and piglets have their tails and the tips of their teeth clipped without being given any painkillers. Eating meat has been linked to heart disease, heart attacks, cancer and strokes, and raising animals for food is a leading cause of the greenhouse-gas emissions that contribute to climate change. According to a recent United Nations report, a global shift towards a vegan diet could go a long way in curbing the worst effects of climate change.
